DAY 5: Amsouzaret - Ifni Lake (2392m)
Heading West out of Amsourzerte, youpassthroughseveralsmall villages on yourwaytowards Ifni Lake, the onlylake in the High Atlas Mountains. The Lake issurrounded by toweringpeaks, scree and rubble and is a pleasant place to set camp and spend the afternoonrelaxing at the shore. Restwell, you’llneed lots of energy for tomorrow!
DAY 6: Ifni Lake - Nelter Hut (3207m)
Todayis the hardestday, heading up a long steeppath up a screeslopetowards the pass at Tizi n'Ouanoums (3684m), a narrowledgebetweentwoshafts of rock. Fromhereitis a long zigzag descent down a precipitouslysteepscreeslope to Nelter Hut, a mountain refuge whereyou’llspend the night. The dorms at Neltner tend to becrowdedwithothertrekkersaiming to tackle Toubkal earlynextmorningso in the summer and when the weatherallowswetypically camp at the Refuge. Congrats, you’vedoneit!
DAY 7: Toubkal Refuge – Toubkal summit (4,167m)– Imlil - Marrakech
Todayis a long daywith an early start, tough going but veryrewarding. From the Refuge, the trail zig-zags up the South Col, a long and moderatelysteepscreeslopeascending 750m to the Tizi-n Toubkal Pass. From the pass, the trail traces a dramaticridge to the summit, withspectacularmountainviews to the N/S/E/W. The trail is set well back from the precipitous drop of the ridge. The walkingisrelativelystraightforward but occasionallydifficult in places and requires a strongsense of determination. The views, however, are wellworthit – you’llbe able to seeacross the Marrakech Plain to the High Atlas Mountains in the north and the Anti Atlas Mountains and the Sahara in the south. You’ll retrace yourfootsteps back down the mountain to the refuge for lunch and then on down to Imlil and back to Marrakech. Todaywas a long daytakingbetween 8-10 hoursdepending on your pace
